Sperm freezing and
storing

In Fertibank we offer the possibility to reserve donor’s semen before starting the treatment.
You can also reserve if, at patient’s request, you want to have samples of the same sperm for future pregnancies.

European regulations

Fertibank’s freezing methods comply with European regulations regarding cells and human tissue (European Directive 2004/23 / EC and RD 1301/2006).


Our goal is to guarantee the sterilization and traceability in the freezing process, we can identify and retreat the damaged lot and investigate what has been the problem.

Freezing straws

Freezing process

Freezing in 0,5 ml high-security and heat- sealed straws CBS CE 0459 (Cryo Bio System). The cryopreservation medium used is IRVINE Freezing Medium (CE).


Heat seal

Once the straws are filled, we seal them through heat seal that prevents sample contamination and isolates them from liquid nitrogen.


Storage

We store the straws in automatic freezers at 196°C with controlled volume and temperature levels.

How do we freeze the samples?

1.

Retrieve the canister that contains the straws and verify that the code is the correct one.

2.

Place the straw at 37ºC during 1 or 2 minutes in the heating plate or water bath.

3.

Cut the heat seal end opposite to the filter with a sterilized scissor. Hold the straw in vertical position inside the tube.

4.

Puncture with a sterilized needle just beneath the filter to let that the contents goes down by gravity in the tube. The tube must be placed in an aluminium block over the heating plate.

5.

Perform a mini-gradient in two layers of different density 90% (0.3-0.5 ml) and 75% (0.5-0.7 ml), centrifuge 20-30 minutes, maximum 300g.

Shipping details



Approved containers: For the transport of the samples, we use Voyageur 2, liquid nitrogen approved containers, Air Liquide approved for the use in biological samples, either for land, air or sea transport.

Sample report:Along with the samples, in Fertibank we attach a detailed report with all the donor’s semen phenotype information. (Rh Group, height, weight, ethnicity, eye colour, and hair colour and texture) and their analytics. Also, you can find the information in your private account.

Safety packing: The containers travel inserted in packing designed so that the samples are protected against incidents and manipulation.

About shipping service: We remind you that the Spanish legislation only allows the shipping of biological samples to professionals or authorized centres.

Sample request advice

Times

The request for samples must be planned in advanced with Fertibank Laboratory.

Address

The samples are delivered to the address specified in the form filled by the customer. Check that the address is correct.

Customer service

In case of delivery delay or any other incident, Fertibank’s customer service telephone number is (+34) 93-962-27-35 (Mon to Fri from 9 am to 7 pm).

Absence

If the centre remains closed or the customer becomes absent, it is responsibility of the customer to establish an alternate delivery system and must communicate so to Fertibank prior to dispatch.

Check packing

Once the sample is received, the customer must check that the packing has not been tampered with. In case any anomaly is detected, contact Fertibank calling (+34) 93-962-27-35.

The containers

After using our sample, contact Fertibank to proceed to hand back the container.

Quality control

We do quality control to all our frozen samples:

  • · We discard the samples that do not match our quality standards after defrosting.
  • · Microbiological culture, discarding the samples that show growth of some type of flora.

Tracking

The control of all our processes allows us to know the traceability of a sample.

Quality measures

We carry out strict quality control of the number of each donor’s sacs and alive births to avoid the maximum limit in Spain (6 per donor).

For that it is necessary the collaboration of the centres and professionals informing in an effective and fast way the results of the treatments and the existence of frozen embryos with donor intervention to fulfil the requirements requested by law (Royal Decree 1301/2006).
